A professional nanny is trained or very experienced in the care and development of children. Nannies often take sole responsibility for children during working hours.

The duties are child related and include soft and stimulating play with the children, getting children up in the morning and taking to and from school/nursery, providing a nutritious diet including shopping for preparing, cooking and cleaning up after children’s meals, keeping the nursery, children’s bedroom and bathroom clean and tidy. Washing and ironing of children’s clothes, arranging educational outings and social events etc.. Babysitting and additional housework should be discussed at interview.

Nannies are usually required to work up to 10 hours per day, five days a week. A nanny position can be live-in or live-out and may require use of your own car.

A nanny usually holds one or more of the following qualifications: NNEB, BTEC, NVQ3, City & Guilds and are CRB checked.

Nannies can be without formal qualifications, but who have a wide range of experience with children, and have worked in the childcare sector for several years.

Salaries vary as to whether live- in or live -out nanny. It is up to the family to make sure tax and N.I. are paid.

According to Working Time Regulations BAPAA recommends that the UK basic holiday allowance of 28 days per annum should apply or 1.66 days per month pro-rata if the placement is shorter than a year. This can include public and bank holidays.
